Phil Fish

The artist who inspires me that I am posting about is Phil Fish. He is a French Canadian independent video game developer who lives in Montreal. This is him:

What he is most famous for, and what I am inspired by, is his video game called FEZ, which has tons of pixel art in it. It has a unique premise where each screen that you can move around in has four angles you can view it from, corresponding to the north, south, east, and west faces of the stage. What impresses me is that he hand-crafted this each one of the hundreds of stages, and (digitally) laid down each pixel and voxel, of which there are more than a million, and likely thrice as many pixels. When I say he hand crafted this game, I mean that he went through and made sure that each pixel, voxel, and trixel (a special kind of pixel-voxel) was exactly where it needed to be to render each stage in the most visually enticing way possible. Here are some examples:

His color palates are also intriguing

And this is also just the visual aspect of FEZ, the gameplay is equally as appealing, with intricate logic puzzles and secrets, most of which the community still haven't been able to unlock.

Phil Fish spend more than five years of his life making FEZ, and he had to postpone the release of his game for three of those five years. His company (which consists of only himself) almost went bankrupt several times as well, but despite his doubts and impulses to quit and get a "real job", he carried on drawing and crafting his game. And he has sold more than a million copies of his game so far.

He inspires me because of his perseverance, his dedication to his craft, and his resolve to achieve perfection. He could have released his game with out putting all that effort in, but he spent three more unbearable years creating the masterpiece that FEZ is.
