Christina Agapakis

Christina Agapakis is a synthetic biologist, artist and science writer based in LA. Her work is about exploring the relationship humans have with microbes. I am particularly drawn to her work because it transcends the borders of art, science and inquiry. She explores both the visual meanings of microbial processes as well as the affects these organisms have on our daily lives/the environment we live in.

I really resonate with her process and her practice. Since she is a PhD level scientist, she often approaches her subject from a scientific angle first, before deciding how to display her work in an artistic manner. I believe that you can learn a lot from thinking about things in this way. However, I am challenged by how rawly scientific a lot of her work is. This makes it less accessible to me since I have not had the classical training that she had, yet.

I REALLY love this exhibition because she has photos of her process as part of the exhibition, but she also exhibits her culture plates as well. The exhibition of live organisms is a recurring part of her work.
