Mernet Larsen

Mernet Larsen is a 75 year old artist who just had her first show in LA. A lot of her paintings are about mundane actions and I really love them and think they are beautiful and always want to look at them for a long time. I love how she uses grids like ceiling grids and floor grids and how the geometric-ness works with the cubic way she paints people. I love how the people in her paintings are formulaic and square but also so expressive at the same time. -Gabe

I looked at Josh Kline's work. In a culture fueled by energy drinks, reality television, LED lighting, and the virtual Internet world that increasingly infringes upon daily existence, Kline often creates commentary on consumerism and modern day culture itself.

This is my favorite, an installated called Skittles:

Egon Schiele

Egon Schiele was an Austrian artist who lived between 1890 and 1918. During World War I he was drafted, but was still allowed to continue his work even with restricted time. He died age 28 of the Spanish Flue. Schiele painted figures, often nudes, and painted them in sickly colors. He mostly focused on nudes of women, and much of his work has strong sexual overtones. I chose mostly his self portraits however because those are the ones I personally like best. Before being deployed his wife was his main model, but during the war his models switched more towards male.

Mamani Mamani

Mamani Mamani

The artist I looked at is known as Mamani Mamani. His real name is Roberto Mamani and he is a Bolivian painter. His works are greatly influenced by his upbringings and events that happened in his life. He says he is "de nacimiento Quechua y sangre Aymara."this comes from a time when he was 5 and his family had to move back to Tiahuanaco, where he lived his grandparents. But really, it was his grandmother who instilled in him the value of culture and heritage and made sure that he never forgot where he cam from and who he was.

Copa De Tobas
Cronicas De La Tierra Sin Mal
Mother Illimani With Inti, Awicha and Children
El Gato De La Suerte

Roberto Mamani Mamani's works of art all contain elements of Andean culture. The colors he uses have specific meanings and represent parts of his culture and the folklore and beliefs of his people. In his paintings, yellow suns are male, pointed mountains are male, rounded mountains are female, blue moons are female, horses (brought to the Americas by the Spaniards) represent the colonization and enslavement of his people, and so on. Each piece tells a story and each color and shape is specifically chosen to represent part of that story. Mamani also paints in series (women, archangels, grandmothers, llamas, suns, mountains) and other sets.

Jeremy Miranda

Jeremy Miranda is a painter who paints in the seacoast area of New Hampshire.

I chose this artist, because I liked how, in many of his paintings, he combined two different places to create one, new place.

Jeremy is interested in how people control and dwell in landscapes.

I really like how his work creates the illusion, that you are in two places at once.  Also how he can create surreal landscapes that are not what you are expecting to see.

I want to try and creating things that are less realistic, and more surreal and fictional.

Kour Pour

Kour Pour was born in 1987 and is a British artist living in Los Angeles. He is part Iranian descent and the work he is most famous for is carpets that he paints.

He spends months researching and working to set up the rug (as the canvas) for each piece. He then will prime the rug with gesso using a broomstick, to give the appearance of a worn rug. Then he will silkscreen an image of the rug, then he paints in the details. Which he then goes pack after and erases and wear away some of the painted parts. Then finally he will repaint these areas again and the piece is finished.
